Homer imagined golden helpers with minds of their own. Hero of Alexandria built a cart that followed a program of rope and pegs. We build with the descendants.

Around 100 BCE someone in Greece built a box of bronze gears that computed where the sun and moon would stand on any day. It is the oldest computer we know of. Two thousand years on, we write ours in words.

The Greeks called free time scholē, the hours in which people think, make and govern themselves. It is where our word school comes from. Software should give those hours back.
